I admit it and proudly:  I’m a gear junkie.  Although purists would no doubt sneer at me, as I’ve never installed an LED heat sink on my own, when it comes to techno-toys that faciliate porn, I’ve got to be way up there.  Five computers, two internet connections on two separate ISPs, and a sexy new laptop on the way?  This house is like the NASA of porn, baby.

We stumbled upon Romance & Cigarettes the other day.  The title drew me first (our two favorite things in the world….duh…), then the cast, and finally the fact that it was written and directed by John Turturro, for whom I have great respect (O, Brother, Where Art Thou?  The Big Lebowski…?  Ringing any bells?)  The guy’s a brilliant actor with an amazing range.  I’d heard he had written something, but nothing could have prepared me for how shockingly hilarious this movie was.  Or how surprisingly touching it was and its characters revealed themselves to be, after I could finally breathe again.  As a matter of fact, I’m left completely torn between whether or not the flick was more beautiful than hilarious or vice versa.  Turns out the guy’s a brilliant filmmaker too.

It’s a musical, but don’t let that scare you — it’s the most innovatively original and intelligently done blend of music and movie I’ve seen since Moulin Rouge and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.  Visit the link to get the gist yourself (although I found the info there paltry — didn’t do it justice at all), but RUN, do not walk to get this movie.   We watch a lot of flicks I never mention but this is one I’m prepared to stand on a street corner and holler about, just to make sure the whole damn world sees it.

I don’t know why it took two years to hit video store shelves.  I don’t know if it made it to anything beyond the festival circuit.   We don’t go to theaters so I don’t know if it even made it there.  But if you’ve ever wanted so see and/or hear…

• James Gandolfini belting out “A Man Without Love” (and quite well, I might add)
• Susan Sarandon say “pussy”

What could be touching in a flick about infidelity and containing “one crude broad”?  Lots and lots.  But the most beautiful moment in the flick for me came during an underwater scene.  I think I literally stopped breathing.   Turturro gave Winslet a moment with Little Water Song.  Hauntingly dark and chillingly beautiful, it utterly nailed the moment’s despair and perfectly illustrated her character’s unexpected pathos and vulnerability.  Watch the video before you see the movie, just for the beauty of the song and the purity of Ute Lemper’s voice.  Then see the movie to be rocked by the moment.

Other fun stuff to watch for:  Aida Turturro (”Janice” from The Sopranos?  And John-boy’s cousin, I hear) as the adorably addled Rosebud.  Steve Buscemi (a hilarious ode to redheads and the pros and cons of circumcision.  NB:  My one and only SLIGHT complaint about this flick is that he may have been under-utilized).  Cousin Bo’s (Christopher Walken) musings on schoolgirls.  A sidewalk vagrant’s obsession with “asses that never age.”
